How it works

What happens in a first therapy session

There is no wrong way to start. Here is what to expect, step by step.

1. A free phone call

Before booking, we have a free 30-minute phone call. You can ask me anything and decide whether you want to work with me. If I am not the right fit, I will help you find someone who is.

2. The first session

This is an assessment: time to get to know each other and talk about what is happening for you. You can tell me as much or as little as you want. Before we start, I will send you my working agreement, which sets out how we work together and what you can expect from me. There is no pressure to carry on afterwards.

3. After that

We agree how often to meet, and we review it as we go; there is no set number of sessions. I also offer one-off sessions for people who want advice on next steps, signposting to other services, or help deciding whether further support is right for them. A one-off session is the same £80 fee.

The details

Confidentiality

Some people put off seeing a GP or a service because they are worried about losing their job or their driving licence. I work differently. I do not report substance use, and what you tell me stays between us. There are limited exceptions that apply to every therapist: where there is a risk of serious harm to you or someone else, including safeguarding concerns, or where I am legally required to share information. I go through them with you before we start, and wherever I can I will talk to you first. I also take my work to clinical supervision, which is a standard part of therapy. My privacy policy explains how I handle your data.

Short answers to common questions

Do I need to have stopped first?

No. You do need to be alert enough to take part in a session, so if you are not, tell me and we will find another time.

How long does therapy take?

I cannot give you a number, because it depends on you and what you want to change.
